* Less than a year after his transfer, on March 20,1975, Charles Schmid was stabbed to death in the minimum security compound.

The day after Tison was moved back to the Annex, Bobby Tuzon went to the on-duty supervisor, Captain Joseph Barrows, to ask is there had been some mistake in the room assignments. He begged Barrows to recommend that he be transferred anywhere as long as it was away from Tison. Barrows said that he couldn't do it, but suggested that Tuzon talk directly with Cardwell.

On April 1, Tuzon was taken to Cardwell's office. It was his first formal interview with the warden about the escape. Bobby repeated what he had discussed with Jimenez, Turner, and Argel on March 22: the detailed plans for the escape, Tison's coercion, and Tuzon's fears for his own safety, which, he said, were even greater now that Tison would be rooming with him. He pleaded for a transfer.

Cardwell wasn't moved. He thought Tuzon was arrogant, that he was demanding, rather than requesting, a change. It made him angry and he showed it. He repeatedly interrupted as Tuzon spoke. Finally Cardwell leaped to his feet, his face reddening, and angrily asked Tuzon who he thought he was talking to. Cardwell ranted about Tison's polygraph results, adding that, in his opinion, Tuzon was the one who was lying. There was one way to find out, Tuzon shot back; but Cardwell refused to give him a test, warning Tuzon that he was sick of his "games."

When Tuzon was returned to the Annex, he was convinced that Cardwell was either incredibly stupid or else had some ulterior motive for his actions.
